CSA you say?

At last, it seems that spring is finally here! On the farm, this means we are working non-stop to get ready for our summer veggie CSA! With that in mind, I thought this would be a good time to explain a little bit about what is a “CSA” and why should you join one.

A CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), or farm share, is simply where members buy into a local farm in return for a weekly portion of their production during that season. While there are many benefits of joining a CSA, I’d like to highlight a few that we think are the most important.

For the farmer, this pre-season commitment from the CSA members provides small farms with much needed income to be able to purchase all the necessary seeds, supplies and labor that go into growing that food. All of these items need to be paid for months before any veggies are ready to harvest. Knowing how much food to grow really helps reduce waste and keep costs down. The truth is that most small farms wouldn’t be able to survive without offering a CSA.

For the consumer, joining a CSA is the absolute best way to get the freshest veggies possible. There is no wondering where your food came from, no middle man, and no shipping across the country. You get to meet the people that grew your food, ask them questions, tell them what you like or don’t like and even tour the farm if you wish! Every dollar you spend goes directly back into supporting your local farm and community!

It is true that we can’t grow lemons in NH and sometimes an entire variety fails for no known reason. However, we aim to plant lots of familiar favorites, as well as maybe some new veggies that you never knew you liked before! We also find that our littlest members are more willing to try veggies that they picked out “at the farm.”

We’d love to have you as a member of our organic veggie CSA this summer! We still have full and half shares available for as low as $25/week! To sweeten the deal, we are excited to announce that our CSA members will receive 5% off their retail purchases in the farm store when picking up their share. Add on subscriptions are available for eggs, chicken, bread, fish and milk too! We will also be adding a lot of new products and vendors in the next few weeks!

Check out our website for more details or send an email to stephanie@normanton.com with any questions or to reserve your share!
